book covers the pre-philately of all those territories which have been Belgian
colonies at some point, ranging therefore from the oldest letters (mostly long
before the Belgian period) up to and including the issuing of the first Belgian
stamps. If the Belgians have never issued stamps in a particular colony, we will
stop the postal history at the point where the Belgian colony ceases to exist. The
Azores
are however an exception to this rule, where a link remains
until the 19th century.”

We
have much pleasure in bringing to our member’s attention the publication of
the results of Patrick Maselis’s extensive research and knowledge in a new
masterful book.
As
yet there is no formal review, but with privileged sight of its content, I
commend it wholeheartedly. The book is richly and joyously illustrated and a
mine of ‘archive information’. It is an absolute must to all interested in
Belgium
’s former colonisation activities and its consequential postal history.
I
am told that works of this stature would normally retail at about €150 but
thanks to sponsorship it will be available on the market at a significantly
reduced price. Furthermore, and as a further concession to members of the
Study Circle
, it is available to us as an absolute bargain.
By
way of summary, it provides not only a history, but most importantly a Postal
History, of all the former Belgian colonies outside Europe from 1451 to
1917: Azores, Canary Islands, Nova Belgica (New York), the ‘Compagnie
d’Ostende’ (Colonies in India), Thierryan territory (New Zealand), Santo
Tomas de Guatemala, Santa Catarine do Brasil, Villaguay (Argentina), Congo,
Lado-Méridi (Uganda/Sudan), Antarctica, Ruanda Urundi and Tientsin (China).
